Art direction and world building: guided by a collage of found sounds, The WATER WORKERS unfolds in an underground world, somewhere between a cave and a factory. I built the environment like a black-box theater, using black cloth, simple illusions, and sparse props. one cloth was animated into a conveyor belt.
i handmade papier mache puppets whose faces float in darkness. the water workers carry, package, arrange, consume, worship and elevate water above ground—shifting the meaning of water. The workers break for lunch to eat hand-drawn meat on fabric. The soundscape was assembled from found audio and an original contribution from a musician.
